Awhile back Tanner joined a Lego robotics team. They would get together every week and work on programing/building the robots and also learn some computer and science stuff. They were getting ready for the 2nd annual Lego Robotics Competition.
Over the weekend the competition was held here in St. George. There were 7 teams competing. The theme was food factor. Each team had to do a project and some research as long as well as some other things. They also competed in 3 two and a half minute tasks with their robots. The tasks included things like getting fish back to base, harvesting corn, getting groceries, getting rid of bacteria, getting a pizza and ice cream to base. Each task was built out of Lego's and they had to use the robots to complete them. It was pretty interesting to watch. Tanner's friend Rohun also competed on a different team and his team took 1st in this part of the competition. Tanner's took third.
At the end there were six awards given out in the following areas: Champions Award, Project Award, Core Values Award, Robot Design Award, Robot Performance Award, and Judges Award. Tanner's team won the Project Award. The theme for the project was to think up a new and innovative way to keep food from spoiling or monitor it so you know if it had spoiled. Tanner's team thought up the idea of milk jugs that change color depending on the temperature. Kind of like those cups that change color depending on if there is hot or cold liquid in them.
We thought it was pretty fun and a good learning experience. Tanner is hoping to be able to do it again next year.
